La Joya ISD Breaks Ground on Nearly $3 Million Transformation of Leo Garza, Jr. Baseball Complex
La Joya, TX - With shovels in the ground and the next baseball season on the horizon, La Joya ISD officially marked the beginning of a nearly $3 million transformation of the Leo Garza, Jr. Baseball Complex - an investment that will serve student-athletes from all three of the district’s comprehensive high schools.
District leaders, coaches, student-athletes and members of the La Joya ISD community gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony celebrating the start of renovations that will significantly modernize the baseball complex and expand its impact across the district.
Once complete, the facility will serve as a competition venue for the baseball programs at La Joya High School, Palmview High School and Juarez-Lincoln High School, providing student-athletes from across La Joya ISD access to an upgraded playing environment.
The approximately $3 million project, funded through district funds, includes the installation of new synthetic field turf, expanded dugouts, new fencing and upgraded netting at the batting cages. The improvements are expected to be completed in December, ahead of the upcoming baseball season.
“This project represents an investment not just in a facility, but in our student-athletes across La Joya ISD,” said Joe Peña, Executive Director of Athletics for La Joya ISD. “Having all three of our baseball programs utilize this complex allows us to maximize this investment while providing our athletes with a quality environment where they can compete, develop and represent their schools with pride. We are excited about what this facility will mean for our baseball programs now and for the generations of student-athletes who will come after them.”
The renovations are designed to improve both the day-to-day training environment and the game-day experience. Synthetic turf will provide a more consistent playing surface, while expanded dugouts, new fencing and batting cage improvements will enhance areas used regularly by players and coaches.
For La Joya High School Head Baseball Coach Guadalupe “Wally” Barrera, the transformation carries added significance as the longtime home of Coyote Baseball prepares to enter a new era while welcoming student-athletes from across the district.
“The Leo Garza, Jr. Baseball Complex is home to so many memories, athletes and generations of Coyote Baseball, so seeing this investment become a reality is incredibly special,” said Barrera. “Our players take tremendous pride in representing La Joya High School, and these improvements will give them an environment that matches the work and commitment they bring to this program. We’re also proud that this field will be a place where baseball players from across our district can compete and create memories of their own.”
The groundbreaking signaled the start of a transformation that extends beyond new turf and facility upgrades. By creating a shared competition venue for three high school baseball programs, La Joya ISD is investing in a resource intended to strengthen opportunities for student-athletes districtwide while maximizing the long-term use of district facilities.
The project supports Priority 3: Thriving Students and Priority 5: Operational Excellence & Financial Stability of La Joya ISD’s Achieving Excellence Together:2030 Strategic Plan by investing resources in facilities that support student experiences while serving multiple schools and programs.
When the first pitch of the new season is thrown, the Leo Garza, Jr. Baseball Complex will begin its next chapter - not only as the home of Coyote Baseball, but as a field where student-athletes from across La Joya ISD can compete, grow and proudly represent their schools.
